A retired Navy commander found himself in the hospital, requiring over 100 stitches, following a brutal mugging in Philadelphia, famously known as the "City of Brotherly Love."
Scott Harris, the victim, was attacked while taking his dog for a walk late Saturday night near the intersection of 30th and Jefferson streets in the Brewerytown neighborhood. The incident left him with head injuries and hazy memories of the assault.
Recalling the events, Harris mentioned a large party happening nearby that he had walked past. He later found himself in the ER, his recollections disrupted after the encounter.
During the mugging, Harris' wallet containing credit cards and identification was stolen. The suspect's description has not been released by authorities.
An ambulance transported Harris to the hospital where he received treatment for a brain injury, broken teeth, and extensive facial swelling and bruising. The surgeon reported stitching up numerous wounds, counting at least 100 stitches, many of which were placed inside his mouth.
Despite Harris' military background, including service in Iraq and Ukraine, he expressed disbelief that such an incident would occur in his own neighborhood.
Joseph Hurchick, Harris' partner, was at home during the attack and suspected the assailant might have been connected to the large party near the playground. Surveillance footage captured three women assisting Harris and his dog back home after the attack.
The couple has expressed frustration with local law enforcement's response to complaints about unruly crowds from outside the neighborhood gathering for late-night parties at the playground. They believe better policing or restricted access to the park at night could prevent such incidents.
Harris and Hurchick, who once saw the park as an asset to their neighborhood, now view it with apprehension, emphasizing the importance of feeling safe in one's own home.
